As a local entrepreneur and a small business owner I sometimes venture out to coffee shops to work on my website, make business calls, update my blog, etc., and I've noticed myself holding coffee shops to a very high standard.
Here's my list of things to do as a coffee shop if you want to lose my business:
* Sticky Tables - Please make sure tables are sticky, all of them within the reach of an outlet.
* Coffee - Don't offer decaf
* Chai - Make it with powder
* Greetings - Don't greet me until I have to 'holler at you from the back to help me spend my money with you
* Dairy Options - Don't offer soy or non-fat
* Management - Please stop by and tell me that I have to purchase something to use the Internet before making sure that I have a drink (computer was blocking the $5 Chai I purchased that you made with powder)
On a positive note, here's what I like about good coffee shops.
So here's what you should do if you want to keep my business:* Drink Order - It makes my day when you remember that I like a non-fat chai, really, you make me feel special when you do that
* Food Selection - A great coffee shop offers pastries, sandwiches, and other really cool compliments to coffee, this further extends the revenue source for the shop, but also helps people spend their money in the shop easier
* Location - A good location is key, the more traffic the better
* Employees - Pay a little more for help and you'll be rewarded by repeat customers. If you are a one man show operating a coffee shop, make sure you are a people person or you try to be a people person
* Community - Be a part of your local community and give back
Not All Coffee Shops Are Created Equal, Or Rather Managed Equally
